The poetry of the Heian court of Japan has been linked with the emergenceof a distinct Japanese language and culture. This title argues that this needfor a cultural unity has resulted in an overemphasis of a relatively minoraspect of Heian poetry, obscuring the porousness of Heian society and thepolitics of poetic expression.
