Demonstrates that in order for Karnatic music to be considered classical,it needed to be modeled on Western classical music, but also to remainIndian. This book argues that these desires led to the emergence of a voicewhich came to stand for Indianness. It provides a model for thinking aboutthis voice in anthropological and historical terms.
