This book is based on aseries of lectures that were given at the universities of Bonn and Bochum to undergraduate and graduate students from the de partments of physics and astronomy. The book is intended as an introduction to the physics and astrophysics of cosmic rays. I am grateful to many colleagues, friends and students for their sup port and encouragement. I am especially grateful to the undergraduate and graduate students for whom I have been thesis advisor: their work appears throughout these pages. The list includes Ulrich Achatz, Markus Böttcher, Andre Crusius-Wätzel, Wolfgang Dröge, Rüciiger Dung, Uwe Jaekel, Mein hard Kneller, Harald Lesch, Hartmut Mause, Martin Pohl, Olaf Stawicki, Adriane Steinacker, Jürgen Steinacker and Ralf WeyeI'. Moreover, I want to thank Rainer Beck, Elly Berkhujsen, Ed Churchwell, Karl Mannheim, Wolfgang Reich, Manfred Simon alld Richard Wielebinski for carefully reading parts of the manuscript and for their valuable sugges tions. I especially wish to thank lan Lerche for his meticulous reading of the whole book and valuable comments, corrections and suggestions to improve the presentation. Needless to say, all remaining errors are my own.
