The theory of the third order ordinary differential equations has been successfully developed over the last three decades. The essential part of the theory is presented in this book, which contains a variety of methods, questions and answers, and solutions to problems encountered within the theory of linear differential equations. A unifying part of the theory is that of a band of solutions which is a subset of the solutions of a given third order differential equation satisfying a certain second order linear differential equation. Thus the rich theory of the second order linear differential equation can be employed to describe the properties of solutions to the third order differential equation. In this volume, a detailed characterization is given of oscillatory and asymptotic properties of solutions of the third order linear homogeneous differential equation, and some boundary-value problems, as well as many other special questions, are formulated and solved. The last chapter deals with physical and engineering applications of the theory.
