Sport is an institutionalised social practice that mirrors the prevailing political and social culture. In Italy, corruption has long been part of that culture, with Italian sport too beset by corruption. This important study explores the intricate relationships between politics, business, sport and organised crime in Italy. Drawing on exclusive access to judicial documents from 'Operation Dirty Soccer', that resulted in 50 arrests across 30 soccer clubs and highlighted the role of the 'ndrangheta (Calabrian mafia) in match-fixing, the book attempts to explain why mafia groups are involved in soccer, what the links are to political corruption, and what might be done to control this problem.
