内容

Regionalism discourse has assumed that by promoting strong regional economic and political cooperation, and facilitating collective policy choices and harmonization at the regional level, nation-states and their peoples will be able to enjoy accelerated economic growth, enhanced standard of living, peace, security and invariably, overall development. However, regionalism when not well development-crafted and focused, can reify dependency, underdevelopment and instability. Many regional integration projects have either collapsed or failed largely because their developmentalist orientation and mechanisms are either weak or non-existent. This book critically interrogates the notion of developmental regionalism and how it applies to Southern Africa, especially within the context of the development trajectory of SADC, and the policy options and interventions necessary to ensure a peaceful and stable regional development process. The contributors examine the institutional architecture and capacity of the SADC, looking at key policy priorities and implementation strategies in the areas of trade, industry, agriculture, private sector development and conflict management facilitate developmental regionalism. The chapters then go on to explore the ramifications of regional interventions for peace building and regional security in post-conflict countries and offer comparative perspectives on how inter-regional development and the global system affect developmental regionalism. Finally, the book suggests key policy options and strategies on how developmental regionalism that promotes economic transformation can be achieved and sustained in Southern Africa.
