In this major study the theme of `church and society' provides a means of examining the condition of the byzantine Empire at an important period of its history, up to and well beyond the fall of Constantinople in 1204. The rulers of the Comneni dynasty and their successors were faced with the challenge of the crusades, a challenge which came at a time of far-reaching change, best understood in terms of the relationship between church and society. In the short term it produced a state of deadlock which left Byzantium valnerable to western pressures. In the long term it pointed to a dominant role for the church in Byzantine society.
