The 11 critical essays in this book challenge the common assumptions about sport in modern society. Internationally recognised sport sociologists Alan Ingham and John Loy use a cultural studies approach to examine how class and gender cultures affect sport and how sport affects culture - especially subcultures. Each essay is based on Raymond Williams's themes of dominant, residual, and emergent cultural practices. These themes relate to the concept of dominant influence that is central to hegemony theory. Throughout the book, the contributors use these themes to examine the interpenetration of sport and social processes.
