For over a century, from the arrival of St. Francisco de Xavier in 1549 to the enforcement of the national isolation policy exerted by the Tokugawa Shogunate in the mid 17th century, the Jesuits were the most active missionary order in Japan.
In 1590, a western-style printing press was brought to Japan by Alessandro Valignano. The Jesuit Mission published doctrine books and academic texts and encyclopedias on Japan, which are today collectively called KIRISHITAN PUBLICATIONS (Kirishitan meaning “Christian” in Japanese).
Only 30 titles and 70 copies are known to exist in the world today, 3 titles reproduced here are the most rarest among them.
