In place of Dutch studies in the Edo period, English studies had become main-stream in the learning of Western culture and civilization. The editor, Masuda Tonosuke was esteemed for his strictness toward each phrase, word and punctuation, and this magazine was honored as the most authoritative in the study of English in the Meiji era.
