Bungei Bunka was a singular Japanese literary journal that swam against the prevailing modernist tide to celebrate Japan's own unique classical aesthetics. Edited by four up-and-coming scholars: Tsutomu Ikeda, Riichi Kuriyama, Fumio Shimizu and Zenmei Hasuda, Bungei Bunka counted among its contributors a plethora of Japanese literary heavyweights including Yoshie Okazaki, Matsuzo Kaito, Keijiro Kazamaki, Kiyoe Saito, Ryohei Shioda, Minoru Nishio, Senichi Hisamatsu, and Seiichi Yoshida. It is also known for Yukio Mishima's brilliant debut. Shiko Munakata's evocative cover art and illustrations hint at the highly Romantic nature of the journal's content.
