It is known that Daitokyu Memorial Library possesses about 7,000 items of rare books concerning literature, history and religion including 40 national treasures and important cultural properties from the Edo period.
This microfilm edition compiled by Dr. Kazuma Kawase covers 740 illustrated books, which have been representative of Edo literature, and which consists of works of Saikaku Ihara, Ikku Jippensha, Monzaemon Chikamatsu, Bakin Kyokutei, Sanba Shikitei, Kyoden Santo, Izumo Takeda, and others.
There are also famous illustrations which have the respective characteristics of these artists: Hokusai Katsushika, Toyokuni Utagawa, Moronobu Hishikawa, Kiyonaga Torii, Utamaro Kitagawa and others. This microfilm edition is useful in studying popular Edo literature and social conditions of the time.
