In the modern Japanese art society, encouragement of new industry and resurrection of traditional art and crafts were closely related to each other. The publisher of this magazine, Toyo Kaiga Kai was also one of the many associations who advocated traditional Japanese art. It included not only illustrations of major artists of the time, but also topical articles on exhibitions and western paintings.
