Tomoto Kobori was a painter of yamato-e, one of the traditional Japanese painting styles, and especially favored historical subjects and warrior's portraits. He also learned Yusokukojitsu (knowledge of principles and precedents on manners, rituals and costumes) and collected numerous materials and books relating to it. His collection particularly focused on books on warrior's norms, and knowledge from them helped his painting work in full.
