About the Song Yuan Print Collection
By the Song dynasty (10-13th century), Chinese publishing was at its zenith. Demand for a huge variety of books, saw government departments, private booksellers, and individuals from the center to remote regions engaging in publishing.
Meticulously-collated texts provided the foundation for later Chinese scientific advances, and the neat, attractive script modeled on the printed-style font of the Tang dynasty, page layouts and the copyright inscriptions, determined the format of subsequent publications. They are referred to as the incunabula of the Orient in the way they were made, utilizing the most sophisticated techniques and materials for the time.
