In 1883 the Japanese government launched the Dai-Nippon Kyoikukai (Great Japan Education Association), the purpose of which was to organize and provide guidance for education in Japan. In 1896 the Association's name was changed to the Teikoku Kyoikukai (Imperial Education Association) and publication began of the bulletin Dai-Nippon Kyoiku (later Teikoku Kyoiku). Taking on board the views not only of members but also outside contributors, in addition to educational ideas, the education system, and education administration, the bulletins covered psychohistory, women's history, and cultural and scientific history, and constitute a basic resource for understanding the world of Japanese education from the late Meiji years until after World War II.
