In the years between the end of World War I and the 1930s, Japan's economy underwent a shift from the export-industry dominance of the war years, to domestic demand-oriented industry, and thanks mainly to its heavy chemical sector, achieved some of the highest economic growth in the world. This growth in modern industry gave rise to a middle class, and also encouraged a population flow from country to city, leading to rapid urbanization of the country's four major industrial belts.
This collection consists of the reprint of basic sources dealing with the development of transport/freight haulage between the wars, divided in three by theme. Essential to any study of transport/freight services, economic or business history, urban history, or modern Japanese history.
