The development of modern sport has been intimately tied to the various industries that surround it, the relationship between sporting goods and the businesses involved in their manufacture and sale being a particularly close one, the number of such businesses also growing with the burgeoning popularity of sport.
Launched on March 1, 1948 by its printers and publishers Nihon Undogu Shinposha, founded by Shigewaka Noda, Nihon Undogu Shinpo was Japan's first sporting goods trade journal. (Its title was changed to Shinpo in 1972 and then Spootsu Sangyo Shinpo in 1978). With no holdings of the journal in the National Diet Library, or in any university or specialist library in Japan, and concerns about the deterioration of originals held by publishers Nihon Undogu Shinposha, a subcommittee of the Japan Society of Sports Industry specializing in the history of the sports industry has therefore put together a database search system for the preservation and use of the Nihon Undogu Shinpo, as a vital resource for learning more about the development of the Japanese sports industry. This information is now available online on the J-DAC platform. Enabling searches of around 900 issues of the journal and 100,000 headings, this online database is expected to contribute significantly to academic research across a range of disciplines, including the study of sport and physical education, economics, management and business studies, law, sociology, engineering, education, and medicine.
